Chatham Manor of Fredericksburg Virginia

Major Churchill Jones

The Jones family owned Chatham throughout much of the 19th century. Major Churchill Jones purchased Chatham from William Fitzhugh in 1806. Over the next sixteen years, he added large porches to the house and improved the property's landscaping.
Churchill Jones bequeathed Chatham to his brother William in 1822. William Jones married twice and had one daughter by each marriage. The two girls were born forty-nine years apart! A portrait of Betty Lacy, William Jones's youngest daughter, hangs on the wall behind you.
