The Sunken Road after the May 1863 Second Battle of Fredericksburg—just minutes or hours after the fighting ended. The debris of battle is everywhere. In the distance is the Hall House, which stood about where the visitor center stands today.
While decades of road work probably removed most artifacts in the road itself, many remained on the road shoulders and in adjacent lots. In the limited excavations done before the 2004 restoration of the road, archeologists recovered dozens of items left behind by the soldiers who fought here in 1862 and 1863.
